A common misconception about continuous improvement is that you should not embark on a continuous improvement programme until you have read widely about the different continuous improvement techniques that are available and have therefore become an ‘expert’ in continuous improvement. In reality, the opposite is actually true – you will never become an expert in continuous improvement unless you on get on and try out some different continuous improvement techniques. Below are a few ideas to help you do this!

Brilliant at the basics

Focus on getting great at using some basic continuous improvement tools such as process mapping, root cause analysis and future state mapping. These techniques can be really effective and have a hugely positive impact on your business. Try them out, learn from the experience and try them again and again until you get really good at using them.

Play to your strengths

Find the approaches that best fit with your personality and the situation you find yourself in and use them. Are you more comfortable with continuous improvement techniques that focus on the people in your business or those that focus on the processes? Are you a natural leader or more of a get on and do-er? Consider these questions and choose the continuous improvement tools that make most sense to you.

Master a handful of techniques

Once you have selected the tools you want in your continuous improvement toolkit, get competent at using them, then refine your techniques and watch your results improve!
