An interesting metric, that helps with continuous improvement, is time.
How much time is spent working on continuous improvement (CI) in your organisation?
That’s it. Simple.
You have a day job
Most likely this is the case, you have other demands on your time.
Assuming this is the case for your colleagues, I wouldn’t expect you to spend all of your time on continuous improvement.
But, I would expect that you would consistently spend some time on it each week if you were serious about CI.
So, how much time does your business typically spend on continuous improvement?
Find your consistent groove
Once you’re conscious of the amount of time and effort you direct to CI, you’ll find a level that makes sense for your business.
Whilst you’re mulling this over, bear in mind that:
- Healthy people spend a portion of their time and energy on diet and exercise.
- Educated people spend a portion of their time studying and learning.
- Improvement people spend a portion of their time trying to make their processes better and reflecting on what works (and what doesn’t!).
In short, if you want to be an organisation that embraces continuous improvement, you need to look and behave like one.
